The first medical visit before
hip replacement surgery

The hip replacement surgery needs to collect several informations about the patient:

1. The asking time:

We need to know if all medical treatment has been given before talking about surgery.
People must describe their symptoms: usually they feel pain during walking but after during the evolution, the pain become permanent.

2. Clinical examination:

Note the length of lower limbs;
the hip mouvements;
the quadriceps and glutheal muscles...

3. Clinical investigations:

The X-Rays show the hip arthritis.
Exceptionnaly, we have to do scanner or MRI in the cases of femoral head necrosis...

4. The medecine which is taken by the patient:

Anticoagulant , Aspirin or others equivalent medecine ?

5. Medical procedure before surgery:

At the moment we consider that the diagnostic of hip arthritis is done and at an evoluate case requiring surgery based on clinical and radiographic criterias, the patient will contact the office by e-mail (r-mosseri@hotmail.com) and he will send to the Hip Institute a numerised X-Ray.

Some questions will be asked (the questionnaire below).

So a complete file is realized.

At this time, if the patient is completely decided and if the waiting time to be operated in his country is too long, he can have an appointment for a date of the surgery (Monday or Friday) and he can organise his travel by arriving minimum 3 days before in order to be examinated by the surgical staff (orthopaedic surgeon, anesthesist, cardiologist, and the dentist surgeon in order to extract infected teeth...).

It's better if the patient can do a short travel to do this procedure one month before.

A travel company will help him and his family to organize his stay in Paris by a welcome at the railway station and by driving him to the hotel which has been reserved for the days before the operation and for the following time of the operation.

6. The Clinic stay:

The arrival at the clinic is one day before the operation.
After the operation, a medical surveillance is realized in the intensive care room.
Preventive antiobiotics and anticoagulant treatment are done.
A physical rehabilitation is delivered after the operation ; the following day, people go on the seat ; and after they begin to walk with scrutches.
The stay at the Clinic is usually 5 to 8 days long after the operation (it depends on each case).

7. After the Clinic stay:

The stay for post-operative care and surveillance is one week more.
During that time, the medical team (surgeon, nurse, physiotherapist...) will visit the patient every day before his coming back to his country.

8. The medical control visit:

Usually, it's important to see the patient 2 months after the operation in order to appreciate the improvements, to adapt the treatment, to do X-Ray control...
